My 5 favourite places in New Zealand

June 10, 2015

New Zealand is an amazing country. If you haven’t visited yet, you need to add it to your list of destinations to check out. Before I moved here, I really didn’t know much about New Zealand. It was quite embarrassing really. When I got here, everything was different from what I thought it was, but in good ways. I had no idea the nature would be so amazingly beautiful. I took so many photos when I first got here, photos of places that Jeremy laughed at me for because they were nothing special to him.

I’ve been lucky enough to travel around the country quite a bit, so today I thought I would list my 5 favourite places that I’ve been to in New Zealand. I won’t include Wellington, as I live here and I don’t really see it as a travel destination, but if you do come to New Zealand, you should definitely check out Wellington as well.

These places are not in any particular order, simply because I can’t choose which ones are my favourites out of the five. They are all amazing places that shouldn’t be missed.

Cathedral Cove

This is not a city, or town, but a tourist attraction really. Before I got to New Zealand, I did a Google search to see what NZ would look like, and pictures of Cathedral Cove were amongst the first ones that came up. Looking at the pictures I thought it looked amazing, and surprisingly it’s even better in real life! Jeremy and I went there a few years back, and the only word I can use to describe it is paradise.

Queenstown

I was only in Queenstown briefly, but Jeremy and I are going back in October this year because we loved it so much. The scenery down there is amazing, and I will make sure to take many photos while I’m there. It’s a destination that most tourists go to while their in New Zealand, and so they should. It’s great for adventurers, so if you’re into bungee jumping, sky diving and that jazz, go there! I’m not a fan of those things myself. Although in saying that, I think I might go paragliding while I’m down there this time.

Nelson

Nelson is a place that I think most people miss, because it’s small and not one of the recommended destinations for tourists, but I absolutely love it. I think I’ve been there about three times by now. The area surrounding Nelson is really beautiful too, and great if you’re a wine drinker and want to visit some wineries. New Zealand wines are incredible, so if you’re into wine you should definitely give them a go.

Taupo

I’ve been to Taupo twice I believe. It’s a beautiful town right next to the lake, so great views from basically any hotel you stay at. Great for going sailing, and they’ve got a few spas around too. It you’re in the area, you should check out Rotorua too, but be prepared – Rotorua reeks! Like, really reeks. It smells like rotten eggs. This is why it didn’t make it on to my list of favourite places. I wouldn’t go back. But don’t let that stop you! Haha. I’m really not selling it, am I? But most definitely check out Taupo. If you’re a patient person, you can also go prawn fishing while you’re their at their Prawn Park. It’s fun, but it takes a long time!

Fox Glacier

This is a very remote place, but definitely worth going to. We drove there from Christchurch and the drive was absolutely amazing. Such spectacular views. We took a helicopter up to see the glacier and the helicopter landed up there, which is how I was able to snap this photo. Franz Josef Glacier is nearby too, so if you’re in the area, you might as well do both!

There you have it. If you ever go to New Zealand, make sure you check these places out. If you’ve got any questions about New Zealand, feel free to ask me. Although I’m not originally from here, I do have quite a few things about the country!

Don’t forget to follow my blog! 🙂
