Songs do still have meaningful lyrics

August 19, 2015

I often hear people say that today’s music is rubbish and has no meaning to it, and I can understand where they’re coming from. I mean, Anaconda anyone? So pointless. But let’s not forget that there are plenty of artists out there today who write original and meaningful lyrics. I often listen to the lyrics of a song and although it might not be the deciding factor to whether or not I like it, it plays a pretty big part sometimes.

So, to show those of you who don’t believe me, I’ve picked out snippets from lyrics that I believe are really worth mentioning. I’m pretty sure you’ll have heard the songs, but if you haven’t you should listen to the full songs too (clicking on the images will take you to the Youtube videos).

The Script – Superheroes

Echosmith – Cool kids

Cool kids

Years & Years – Shining

Avicii – The Nights

The nights

Jaymes Young & Phoebe Ryan – We won’t

We won't

I love all these songs to bits, beyond the lyrics. I’ve got a very broad music taste so I like songs from most genres. I like catchy songs too, it doesn’t always have to be about the lyrics, but it’s no secret that you can connect more with a song that has meaningful lyrics.

What songs with great lyrics do you like?

Hi Sophie, these are some great music choices. My all time favourite is Beyoncé and Kelly Clarkson. I feel all the songs are talking to me directly. I recently heard a song by Rachel Platten, Fight Song. Listening to this song after a long tiring day at work refreshes me up.

Hope you like the songs I suggested. Let me know your thoughts.

I like Beyoncé and Kelly Clarkson too. Although, I don’t think all Beyoncé’s songs are meaningful. But then again, they don’t have to be. 🙂

I so agree with you, many tunes have good lyrics 🙂 I have also been told that lyrics and music were so much better back in the days – but were they really? I don’t really see the deeper meaning in lyrics that runs “ramma lamma ding dong” repeatedly 🙂

Haha fair point. I guess people are mostly referring to the Beatles and so on!

Cage the Elephant – Shake Me Down
In my life, I have seen,
    People walk into the sea,
    Just to find memories,
    Plagued by constant misery,
    Their eyes cast down,
    Fixed upon the ground,

    I love this song…

I love The Script — basically every song could belong on this list. Also, Jason Mraz’s “I won’t give up” makes me cry every time. It’s the song I hum to my kids (especially the “how old is your soul” line), and the one I think of when my husband goes out to sea (especially the second verse about “if you need your space/to do some navigating/I’ll be here patiently waiting). See?? Now I’m crying 😉

Aww that sounds beautiful! I agree that all songs by the script are amazing! And I used to be a huge fan of Jason Mraz too:) haven’t listened to him much lately, might have to look him up again. My favorite song by him is ‘you and I both’.

A lot of people totally discount music today because for every meaningful song there is, there is about 5 completely rubbish songs. So no ever puts in the effort to understand these lyrics.

    Great song choices. Maria x

I agree, if the lyrics are meaningful to us personally then we will connect more with them because they will evoke some sort of emotion when we hear them. I can’t think of any songs right now that are like that, but I do have a favorite song that I listen to when I’m feeling down. It’s not that the lyrics are super “meaningful” or anything but the beat is catchy and it just motivates me to be happier and keep going! It’s silly but the song is Shake it Off by Taylor Swift 😛

That’s not silly at all, I love that song! Haha. But yeah, I wouldn’t say that I connect with the lyrics of that song, but it’s just so catchy!
