Casual drive on a Saturday

August 22, 2015

It was pretty nice out in Wellington today, so Jeremy and I decided to go for a bit of a drive after lunch. I had another burger for lunch by the way, haha. I will blog about that tomorrow.

Jeremy suggested that we drive to Lake Wairarapa seeing as we haven’t been there before, and it’s not too far away from Wellington. So off we went. On the way there we stopped a few times at some lookouts. The light wasn’t great where we took the first photos, but here they are.

Jeremy was a bit nervous about me driving up there because the road is really windy and narrow, but I’ve driven on roads like that before, which he seems to have forgotten, haha! So it wasn’t an issue at all.

Once we got over the hill, we arrived in a little town called Featherston. There wasn’t much there, just a few shops an a cute little church that I took a photo of.Β It was so quiet there too, hardly any traffic or people walking around.

From there, we headed off towards the lake. We learned pretty soon that the lake wasn’t very exciting! We drove around it for a while, but decided that there was no point stopping, because photos of the lake wouldn’t have looked very nice anyway. But we just continued on down the road we were on.

We knew the road would eventually come to a dead end, because we were driving to the very south of the North Island. Along the way there were loads of sheep and cows. At one point we had to stop because of cows crossing.

We continued on and there were lots of photo opportunities along the way. The road took us to a beach called Ocean Beach. There Β were a few people camped out there, and there were also some summer houses around there. All I could think was ‘who would spend an hour and a half driving out here, just to camp up next to the ocean?” Jeremy on the other hand seemed to understand fully.

I’ve never really enjoyed beaches much, which is strange, I know. But I still love taking photos of them because they look beautiful. I just have no interest going swimming or sticking around there for ages, haha.

After that, we were on our way home again. It was nice to just go for a drive. New Zealand is such a beautiful country that you’ll be sure to see something picturesque wherever you go. I tried to get some close-up shots of lambs, but they ran away every time I tried. They’re so cute though!

We’re just about to head of to the LUX light festival to have a look. I might post about that tomorrow or the day after.

Do these photos make you want to visit New Zealand? πŸ™‚

Hi Sophie! Like you, I’m not that much of a beach person but Piha and especially Bethells Beach in West Auckland have made me change my mind πŸ™‚ They’re quiet and peaceful places. Anyways, I thought I’d ask you for suggestions on places to visit around Wellington as we’re headed there this October. We’ve been to Wellington before and seen the city. We’ve gone to Martinborough as well. Are there other nice places around Wellington? Thanks in advance πŸ™‚

It depends what sort of stuff you like really πŸ™‚ Are you an adventurous person, someone who prefers relaxation, a foodie, an art fanatic? If you tell me what sort of stuff you usually like, I’ll probably be able to recommend some places in Wellington! πŸ™‚

Interesting, indeed. I do like beaches, but then that one doesn’t look too friendly by comparison with our local ones which give pleasant swimming even in midwinter – we have this handy little warm current. Seems the sheep learn to be sheepish at a young age in that part! πŸ™‚

Yeah I definitely wouldn’t recommend swimming there in winter, it would be freezing cold! Haha.

Oh cool! Where do you live now? πŸ™‚ The photos I took weren’t really in Wellington though, it was about 1,5 hours away from Wellington I’d say πŸ™‚

You really should, Auckland is alright, but I have to say I like Wellington better! πŸ™‚ Auckland is too big.
