Pokémon hunting in Palmerston North, New Zealand

July 11, 2016

I’ll admit it. I’m slightly addicted to the new Pokémon GO game. We’ve been playing it all weekend. It’s pretty good though, because it means you go out and exercise a bit, even if it’s just walking. I normally stay inside quite a bit, especially in winter, but now I have something motivating me to get out moving.

It’s also good because it brings you to places you might now have gone otherwise, and it shows you things that you may not have noticed, even if you had been there before. I took some photos of some Palmerston North art while we were out.

It’s crazy how popular this game is! It’s only been out for about a week and it seems everyone is playing it. In Wellington I thought it was funny but not surprising that you ran into people playing the game, but we’ve seen so many people playing it in Palmerston North, even when we’re not in the city. You sort of just look at each other and smile.

On Saturday evening I was walking around the square and I swear there were at least 15 other people there playing at the same time. One guy looked at me and said ‘Are you playing GO?’ and when I said yes he laughed and said ‘Happy hunting!’ And yesterday when I was back at the square I kept walking past the same two people and the third time we just looked at each other and laughed.

I’ve managed to catch 35 out of 147 Pokémon so far. I’ve caught a lot of the same, but I’m hunting to find new ones. These are a few of the ones I’ve caught.

Unfortunately the game is still a little bit buggy. Sometimes you’ll just be kicked out of it and then you can’t log back in because their servers are having issues. And when you go to a gym to do some fighting, sometimes the opponent will get down to 1HP and then nothing happens and you lose, no matter how much you attack it. Sometimes it just won’t let you fight at all.

Hopefully they’ll have those issues sorted soon. I suppose it’s acceptable that there are some issues when the game is still so new. I’m pretty sure they’re working their hardest on fixing the problems.

Will you be playing Pokémon GO?

What is it and why do you go outside? Is it like geocaching? 🙂

Yeah, kind of. You walk around and Pokémon appear for you to catch. You have to walk around different areas to find different Pokémons. 🙂 It’s quite fun (even though I’m 27, haha!)

My son Leo just got in a few minutes ago after 3 tries at an account. I’m considering setting it up on my phone too. Good way to explore the city!
