It’s that time of the year again. Wellington on a Plate has started and we’re super excited to try some burgers from the restaurants taking part in the ‘Burger Wellington’ part of the event. Last year I managed to try four burgers in the two or so weeks the event was on. I kind of feel like trying more this time, but it’s so unhealthy, I probably shouldn’t.
We had a look through the menu on Saturday and decided to try the burger from Brew’d Eastbourne. It sounded pretty yummy. This is how it was described:
“The Chimney Sweep – Beef patty with Kāpiti smoked cheddar, Waikanae smoked streaky bacon, Parkvale Mushrooms in a creamy sauce and Penray Gardens tomato chilli jam in a brioche bun, with fries”
Sounds yummy, right? Well, I’m afraid it was a bit of a letdown. The beef patty was so flavourless I kind of wondered if they forgot to season it, or if they just thought the bacon would make up for it. Well, it didn’t.
The bun was cold, there was hardly any cheese on it, and it was just overall not very tasty. The fries that came with it were OK. Nothing spectacular, but still good enough to finish.
I know this isn’t part of judging the burger but I wasn’t too impressed with the restaurant/pub either. It was pretty cold in there, even though I kept my jacket on. To be fair, it was a horrific day outside, but I would have expected them to crank on a bit more heat. The fact that you had to go outside to go to the toilet didn’t make things any better.
All in all, we were left disappointed. Not a great start to the event, but fingers crossed we’ll be able to try some better burgers before the event is over. It’s such a shame that it only goes for about two weeks. Some of the restaurants do cocktails as well, and I would have loved to try a couple, but they’re the same price as the burgers so it seems like a bit of a waste of money! If only I was rich.
