Penguin spotting, and a tour of Cadbury Chocolate Factory in Dunedin

November 20, 2016

Day 2 in Dunedin started off with a drive out to the Otago Peninsula to see if we could spot some penguins or Albatrosses. There were tons of seagulls out there, but we couldn’t really see any albatrosses. We went for a walk down to the beach to see if we would have better luck finding a penguin. I didn’t really expect us to find any, because I’ve never seen a wild penguin in New Zealand before, even though they tell me they’re everywhere – even in Wellington.

On our way down, a man stopped us and asked if we were looking for penguins. When we let him know we were, he told us where to find one. I got pretty excited. We walked to where he told us it was, but at first I couldn’t really see anything, so we gave up and walked around the area trying to find others. Then Jeremy yelled out and told me to come back to where we first were. Turns out the penguin was hiding in it’s little hole, probably sitting on some eggs.

So I guess I believe that they do exist now. It was quite hard to get a good photo of it because it was hiding in there, but after a few tries, I got an alright picture. Proof that wild penguins are real!

From there we drove back into Dunedin to go check out Baldwin Street. Baldwin Street is the world’s steepest residential street. We had to walk up it of course! It was a pretty intense walk for sure! If you don’t believe it was steep, just look at the photo below of one of the houses up that street.

Walking down was easier, but definitely not easy still. By that time it was lunchtime, so we drove back to the Octagon and had the fastest lunch I’ve ever had, because we had a tour of the Cadbury Chocolate Factory booked in very soon. I had to eat my lunch so fast I felt a bit sick after.

Cadbury Chocolate Factory

The tour of the chocolate factory was pretty interesting. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take photos in there, but we got lots of chocolate to take with us. Yum. Although, I’m trying to cut down on the amount of chocolate I eat. Very difficult to do when you love chocolate. And now I have all this chocolate tempting me.

After the tour, it was time to go straight to the airport to fly back to Wellington. A very short trip, but very awesome still!
